Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

TL;DRAI assistants answer questions directly and cite a handful of sources. GEO is the work of becoming one of those sources, so the answer mentions your business instead of a competitor.

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your website and your wider web presence so AI assistants mention and cite your business in their answers. The engines in question are the ones your customers already use: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews.

Classic SEO competes for a position in a list of links. GEO competes for a place inside the answer itself. If SEO is getting your book into the library catalog, GEO is getting the librarian to quote your book when someone asks a question.

Why it matters

A growing share of research that used to start at a search box now starts in a chat window. Someone asks "which business coach in Munich works with founders?" and gets a direct answer naming two or three providers, often without clicking anything.

That concentration is the point. A search results page distributes attention across ten blue links. An AI answer names a handful of sources, sometimes only one. If the assistant never mentions you, you are invisible in that channel while a competitor gets recommended by name. And because assistants answer with confidence, the recommendation carries more weight than a ranking ever did.

The numbers behind this are stark. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing behavior of 900 US adults and found that when an AI summary appears on a Google results page, clicks on regular results drop from 15% to 8%, and the sources cited inside the summary get clicked in only 1% of visits. Being named in the answer is the visibility; the click rarely follows.

Standard analytics miss this shift almost entirely. Malte Landwehr describes an agency whose web analytics attributed zero leads to AI assistants. When the agency added "how did you hear about us" to its lead forms, 23% of inbound leads named ChatGPT or Perplexity as the place they found the company.

You can see where you stand by asking the assistants what your customers would ask. Many businesses ranking well in Google discover they appear in zero AI answers for their own category.

How it actually works

There are two ways into an AI answer, and they work on different timescales.

Training knowledge. Models learn about brands from text on the open web: articles, reviews, directories, forum threads. If your business is described consistently across many sources, the model absorbs that. This layer changes slowly, with new model versions.

Live retrieval. Most assistants also search the web at answer time, read a shortlist of pages, and cite what they used. Which pages make the shortlist is decided largely by classic search rankings. Which of those pages get cited depends on how quotable they are.

That second step is where on-page GEO happens. Assistants favor pages that:

  • answer the question directly, near the top, instead of burying the point
  • state concrete facts and numbers an answer can repeat
  • use clear, descriptive headings that map to real questions
  • carry structured data, so machines can parse who you are and what you offer
  • match the information about your business found elsewhere on the web

These patterns are measurable. Kevin Indig analyzed 1.2 million ChatGPT answers and found that 44% of citations come from the first 30% of a page, and that cited passages were twice as likely to sit under a heading phrased as a question. The Princeton research team that coined the term GEO ran controlled experiments across 10,000 queries: adding statistics, quotable expert lines and named sources lifted a page's visibility in AI answers by up to 40%.

Third-party corroboration does the rest. Assistants lean heavily on comparison articles, review platforms and forums; analyses of high-intent queries put the share of AI brand mentions that come from third-party pages above 80%. A business named consistently in those sources gets named in answers.

What German-language data shows

The shift is already visible in the DACH market. Sistrix data presented at SEODAY shows AI Overviews appearing for 20% of keywords in the German Google index. Only 19% of those answers contain regular inline links, and 60% of them name no brand at all. Every answer without a brand name is an open slot that a well-positioned business can claim.

A second effect is specific to German-language markets. Reports from SMX Munich indicate that for roughly 70% of German-language prompts, AI models run their background searches in English and translate the result. German sites now compete with the global English-language web, which makes consistent entity signals and strong German-language sources more important, not less.

GEO and SEO share a foundation

GEO does not replace SEO; it sits on top of it. Retrieval runs on search indexes, so technical health, good content and link authority still decide whether you are in the room. What GEO adds is a shift in emphasis: entity consistency, citability and brand mentions count for more, and an unlinked mention in the right article now has measurable value.

Google itself provides a useful reality check: its official guidance states that no special AI files or formats are needed to appear in its AI features, and points back to standard, people-first content. Most of what works in GEO is disciplined SEO plus quotable pages, not a secret new technique.

The practical consequence: fix the SEO foundation first, then make your pages quotable, then earn mentions in the sources assistants cite.
